Expect Miracles

Should I respond to God’s calling to be a full-time minister? Who am I that God could use me mightily? As I pen the enrollment of students this year, God has put Gideon in my heart; He wants us to re-think how Gideon was raised up:

I) Gideon was a person with an assortment of problems (Judges 6:13-15)

13 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.”

14 The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”

15 “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”

Gideon asks God many questions in the above verses and through them, we have few observations about him.

A sense of loneliness

Gideon said, “If the Lord is with us”, which shows that he didn’t feel the presence of God; he felt lonely.

A sense of failure

Gideon said, “why has all this happened to us?” “this,” was the fact the Israelites were oppressed and plundered by the Midianites; he felt that the nation was a failure as a whole.

A sense of loss

Gideon said, “Our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?’” in which he meant that God had been with the Israelites in the previous generation, but now, they weren’t experiencing the work of God; Gideon felt a sense of loss.

A sense of abandonment

Gideon said, “But now the LORD has abandoned us”, showing that he felt that God had abandoned them.

A sense of powerless

Gideon said, “how can I save Israel?” meaning that he felt that he was powerless.

A sense of poverty

Gideon said, “My clan is the weakest in Manasseh”, meaning that he was very poor / weak.

A sense of inferiority

Gideon said, “I am the least in my family”, showing that he felt very inferior.

In addition to that, Gideon’s thinking was well-distorted. He said that God had abandoned the Israelites, when in fact, He had not; it was Israelites themselves who had turned away from Him. Gideon said that his clan was the weakest / poorest in the tribe of Manasseh, but his clan was not poor at all, on the contrary, they had more than 10 servants. This was the state that Gideon was in when he was called.

II) Gideon expected miracles and God raised him up as a vessel of miracles (Judges 6:13)

Gideon had a lot of problems, however, God chose him to be a Spirit-filled judge. What was the key? We find a clue in Chapter 6, verse 13 when Gideon asked the angel of the Lord, “Where are all His wonders?”

It turns out that Gideon was a man who expected miracles because he knew that God had led the Israelites in the past, and he was still seeking and waiting for God’s wonders to happen in his own generation. Therefore, God chose Gideon, and not only for him to witness miracles, but to have part in them.

Here, I would like to encourage all who are called. Do you feel inferior? Do you feel useless? Do you feel that you have a lot of problems? As long as you expect God to work and are willing to be used by Him, He will raise you up mightily. 611 Leadership Institute encourages you to boldly respond to God’s Call and experience His wonders! ■
